An ode to Wally the Wombat the hero from the 2020 wildfires in Australia. This is Wally. He is a wombat, a cute furry creature from Down Under. When those awful fires were raging in Australia at the beginning of the year and there was so much destruction, this little 50lb creature saved the day. Literally, for so many other species of animals suffering there.

These little fellows like to burrow underground and munch on roughage. Normally Wally likes to live alone and mind his own business but this year was different. He could smell fire. He proceeded with caution remembering what all those fire fighters had taught him in fire safety at school. He heard the smoke detector go off. ALARMS went off in his head. He told himself to stay calm to to think before he made any silly mistakes. Looking around he found his fire extinguisher. He woke his family. Stay low. Check. Touch the door knob to make sure the fire isn't burning right outside the door. Check. Exit his home.

Only to find that his home was fine. It was the world around him on fire. What to do? He noticed his neighbors running thru the brush, koalas, rabbits, skinks, lizards, echidnas and wallabies all running from the flames. He thought fast. He raised his fire extinguisher and made a path to his burrow where he ushered his friends into his home of underground tunnels. Just in time too! He was able to close the door just as the fire swept overhead. But all were safe.

They all thanked him for saving their lives and moved on to other parts of his burrow for privacy. When they were able to emerge the world around them had changed but they were all so grateful to have their lives and family by their sides. They later awarded Wally with a metal for his bravery in saving their lives.

This felt mask is adjustable with a elastic at the back so it will grow with your life saving wombat. The felt is soft on the skin and can also be worn on the forehead with the same effect. This mask will provide hours of fun and entertainment while encouraging you little one to use his/her imagination at the same time.

*Some speculation has surfaced as to whether the Wombat actually herded other animals into his burrow. They tend to be territorial but do have extensive tunnel systems. It is thought that the animals found the burrows and entered them staying at a safe distance from the wombats. All realizing that the bigger fear was the fire and not each other. Many animals were found unscathed among the destruction and the only way for this to be possible was for the animals to have sought shelter in the burrows.* SOB!
